NEW YORK; CURATED BY IAN ALTEVEER, HELEN MOLESWORTH, AND DIETER ROELSTRAETE) It seems more than appropriate that one of the year's most artistically rewarding and culturally meaningful
exhibitions — the tour de
force retrospective of Kerry James Marshall's paintings at the Met Breuer — opened
in the short interregnum between the Obama and Trump presidencies.
The
exhibition suggested that, through drawing, sculptors can express space
in new ways -
in terms of light and shade, emotional and physical
forces and particles of matter - and make «nothingness» into something that is «full» and charged with energy.
Since joining
forces with Philomene Magers
in 1998, she has continued to bring attention to
new lines of artistic inquiry and to present
exhibitions across media and approaches, including shows featuring younger generations of artists such as Cyprien Gaillard, Pamela Rosenkranz, Analia Saban, and Lizzie Fitch / Ryan Trecartin.
This expanded version of that
exhibition fills our galleries as never before, presenting a thematic journey that reveals the breadth of America's modernist vision, beginning with the great heroes of American art of the late 19th century, whose work set the course for modern art
in the United States, and concluding with a grand display of the Abstract Expressionists, whose
new visual language turned American art into a global
force.
Sterne's work was included
in the pioneering
exhibition «First Papers of Surrealism»
in 1942 organized by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp
in New York, where Sterne had been
forced to flee from Europe
in 1941.
The
exhibition charts «the development of White's practice, from his emergence as a
force in the Chicago art world through his mature career as an artist, activist, and educator
in New York and Los Angeles.»
Inspired by natural landscape of
New Orleans, the
exhibition's title also alludes to the city's cultural landscape as a creative
force — saxophonist Archie Shepp described jazz as a triumph of the human spirit, a lily that grows «

Placing

in dialogue, the
exhibition will reflect on experiences of exclusion, displacement, transience, migration and xenophobia, exploring the complex socio - political

new solo
exhibition at Pierogi, features three projects
in which the artist creates a mark - making system through collaboration with
forces outside of his control.
The
exhibition features a
new series of Black Lives Matter paintings conceived by the Richmond, Va. - born artist
in response to the Michael Brown and Eric Garner killings and the rallying of communities across the United States
in protest of police use of lethal
force on unarmed black men and youth.
Instead, highlights from 1963 to 2005 are arranged rhythmically, bestowing the
exhibition with a forceful dynamic that determinately carries the viewer from September 11 - inspired sequences to
new editions and first time gelatin prints of early performance pieces before breaking, not unlike a wave,
in all its
force in the back room, where the video «Viet - Flakes» (1965) shows the most horrific aftermath of war imaginable.
