The VCS remained the most popular voluntary
standard in the
forest carbon markets, with projects developed according to VCS methodologies transacting 14.6 MtCO2e, or 46 % of all market activity.
The Surui
Forest Carbon Project (SFCP) earned dual validation under both the Verified
Carbon Standard (VCS), which ensures that the project is following recognized procedures for measuring
carbon emissions reductions, and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB)
Standard Gold, which ensures the project is being carried out in a way that preserves biodiversity and serves the people living there.
The Surui — like the Tolo River People — first had to work with consultants to measure the
carbon captured in trees, identify the threats to the
forest, convert the threats and acreage to
carbon emissions, and then calculate emission reductions that would be generated by saving the endangered portion of the
forest — all in accordance with complex technical requirements of international
carbon accounting
standards.

standard contracted the largest volume of
forest carbon credits from any North American program... owing to their popularity among purely voluntary buyers based primarily in the U.S.» Corporate Social Responsibility buyers of the two million ACR

Standard offers project proponents several options for assuring the permanence of
carbon stocks in
forests.
These and other third - party
standards also address permanence for
forest - based
carbon offset projects such as reforestation and avoided deforestation.
In their media release announcing the report, the World Agroforestry Centre points out the benefits of reducing deforestation in combatting climate change, and how they are working with the UNEP to develop a
standard method for measuring
carbon storage of landscapes, in order to develop mechanisms to incentivize farmers to preserve
forests.
A
forest conservation project backed by Shell, Gazprom Market and Trading and the Clinton Foundation on the island of Borneo has won approval under a
carbon accounting
standard, reports Reuters.
The plan was to save their
forest and earn offsets for the
carbon captured in trees under a financing mechanism know as REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation), but REDD project
standards require a «Free Prior and Informed Consent» (FPIC, pronounced «F - pic») by the local people, a measure that requires disclosure, discussion and agreement — a process involving far more than just a few meetings between community leaders and a project developer.
