In about 10 percent of cases, dry AMD progresses to the more advanced and damaging
form of the eye disease.
In dry macular degeneration, the most common
form of this eye disease, yellowish cellular deposits called drusen (extracellular waste products from metabolism) form under the retina.
Inherited
forms of eye disease are arguably the best described and best characterized of all inherited diseases in the dog, at both the clinical and molecular level and at the time of writing 29 different mutations have been documented in the scientific literature that are associated with an inherited ocular disorder in the dog.

It therefore remains the case that clinical
eye examination should continue to be used to identify dogs clinically affected by any
form of PRA, as well as other
eye diseases.

The most common
eye diseases in the breed are cataracts, distichiaisis, persistent pupilary membrane, and iris coloboma, with Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration (PRCD), a
form of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Collie
Eye Anomaly (CEA), Canine Multifocal Retinopathy (CMR), and glaucoma have been seen but are rare.
It should be noted that many breeds
of dog are known to carry multiple
forms of inherited retinal
disease and the DNA test will not replace the need to remain vigilant for other
forms of inherited
eye disease in the breed.
Unlike the other
forms of accepted EGC
disease, the herpes 1 (rhinotracheitis, FHV - 1) virus is thought by many to be the underlying cause for these
eye lesions.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA — and specifically, the prcd
form of PRA) is an inherited
eye disease rooted deep in the gene pool
of at least a couple dozen breeds.
