Finally, although Stein and colleagues made no
formal assessment of attachment, they did make
observations of the infant's reaction to being separated from the mother when in the presence of a stranger: distress was evidenced by significantly fewer of the children of the mothers who had had a postnatal depression, possibly indicative of a higher
rate of avoidant attachments.4
