ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Guest curated by Robert Storr, professor and dean of the Yale University School of Art and
former senior curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition and an accompanying catalogue will bring fresh perspective to these
artists and examine the
figurative impulses that connect them.
A
former illustrator, Leveille has been attracted to a
figurative style of drawing and painting and has influences ranging from Old Masters like Titian and Fragonard to contemporary
artists like Walter Robinson and Kara Walker.
Their influence has extended to
artists as diverse as abstract painter Jack Bush and the Painters Eleven, as well as contemporary Scottish (and
former Montréaler)
figurative painter Peter Doig.
After doing those abstract works the first
figurative painting I did was called A Portrait of the
Artist as a Shadow of His
Former Self.
Celebrating his life as an
artist, this expansive exhibition (organized by Douglas Fogle,
former chief curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles) presents a selection of Mr. Melotti's work, featuring his early, somewhat - surreal
figurative ceramics and his later abstract, brass sculptures, which portray political and theatrical subjects.
The rediscovered
artists range from Milton Resnick, a 78 - year - old
former abstract expressionist who has moved toward
figurative painting, to Judy Linn, a 47 - year - old photographer, to Jane Freilicher, a 70 - year - old landscape painter.
Emerging as through hazy, mist - like fields, Janis Avotins» (Latvia, 1981) large abstract landscapes represent a turning point from the
artist's
former figurative works.
Kehinde Wiley is a
former cover
artist of Juxtapoz (January 2010,) and Amy Sherald is an established
figurative painter, both
artists centering on black people in bold contemporary styles.
Again, African - American
artists are very much on the agenda: deceptively naive paintings by
former slave Bill Traylor, who died in 1949, feature at Betty Cuningham ($ 50,000 - $ 140,000), while Donald Morris shows Bob Thompson, who was inspired by European Old Masters to produce boldly coloured
figurative paintings (nine of 13 works sold on first day, $ 125,000 - $ 250,000).
We hope the exhibition will encourage more dialogue around Wróblewski and reaffirm his importance and contribution to contemporary European
figurative painting; not only in relation to
artists from Poland and the
former Soviet Union, such as Wilhelm Sasnal, but also with regard to figures such as Luc Tuymans and Marlene Dumas.
