Scientists hope to ease the mental burden of diseases such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder by selectively targeting traumatic memories with behavioral therapy, drugs, ECT and milder
forms of brain stimulation.

In a recent experiment on babies in a hospital nursery, researchers recorded
brain EEGs while infants experienced different
forms of stimulation, including a painful heel stick.
«Every day, most
of us take for granted that when we will to move, we can move any part
of our body with precision and control in multiple directions and those with traumatic spinal cord injury or any other
form of paralysis can not,» said Benjamin Walter, associate professor
of Neurology at Case Western Reserve School
of Medicine, Clinical PI
of the Cleveland BrainGate2 trial and medical director
of the Deep
Brain Stimulation Program at UH Cleveland Medical Center.
This
form of attempted
brain hacking — known as transcranial direct current
stimulation (tDCS)-- is not as far - fetched as it might sound.
These include two types
of short - term memory training, physical exercise, mindfulness meditation, learning a musical instrument, wearing a nicotine patch and a
form of electrical
stimulation of the
brain.
Deep
brain stimulation in mice also triggers the production
of proteins that encourage neurons to
form new connections.
Deep
brain stimulation is not the only
form of electrical
stimulation that could help restore movement after a spinal cord injury.
If unobtrusive
brain stimulation proves safe and effective in larger classroom trials, the technology could augment traditional
forms of study, says Roi Cohen Kadosh, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University
of Oxford, UK, who led the study.
The study examined the effect
of a technique called transcranial direct - current
stimulation (tDCS), a
form of non-invasive
brain stimulation, on the neuromuscular, physiological and perceptual responses to exhaustive leg exercise.
«If the trial proves successful, it represents a big moment in this field
of medicine: For the first time we could have an FDA - approved
form of noninvasive
brain stimulation to help people with stroke by promoting concrete motor improvements.»
Demonstrated in Science in 2015, the system represents a noninvasive prototype that could help researchers unravel the neuronal underpinnings
of brain disorders and someday help treat recalcitrant psychiatric and neurological diseases — without resorting to the bulky electrodes currently used for deep
brain stimulation in the treatment
of Parkinson's disease and some
forms of depression.
And finally, Frankincense is included, which is not only heavily researched for anti-cancer activity but is indicated for all
forms of cancer, tumors, cysts, behavioral conditions, depression,
brain disorders, seizures, immune system
stimulation and regulation, autoimmune disorders, DNA repair, and more.
Animals exposed to enriched environments high in
stimulation have been shown to display increased hippocampal cell proliferation and neurogenesis compared with those reared in relative deprivation.7 Poverty represents a
form of human deprivation that may parallel this animal model, raising the question
of whether low levels
of stimulation and relative psychosocial neglect associated with poverty have a similar negative effect on human
brain development.
ECD programmes can take many
forms, including promotion
of good health and nutrition, support for safe and stimulating environments, protection from risks such as violence or abandonment, parenting support and early learning experiences, media, preschools and community groups.4 Poverty is the key underlying cause
of poor child development; children living in poverty are exposed to many negative influences, including poor physical environments, inadequate nutrition, parental stress and insufficient cognitive
stimulation.5 Undernutrition can influence
brain development directly by affecting
brain structure and function, or indirectly via poor physical or motor development, in addition to other pathways.6 — 8 Exposure to multiple co-occurring risks most likely contributes to greater disparities in developmental trajectories among children with differential exposure.9 — 12 This paper focuses on associations between specific aspects
of children's physical environments — access to improved water and sanitation (W&S)-- and childhood development as measured by performance on a test
of receptive language.
EMDR is a complex method
of psychotherapy that integrates a range
of therapeutic approaches with eye movements or other
forms of rhythmical
stimulation that jump - start the
brain's information processing system.
ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY Also known as ECT, this highly controversial technique uses low voltage electrical
stimulation of the
brain to treat some
forms of major depression, acute mania, and some
forms of schizophrenia.
Neurotherapy utilizes various
forms of biofeedback, such as Neurofeedback, Audio - Visual Entrainment, Cranial -
stimulation, Heart - Rate Variability, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well analysis and recommendations on neurophysiological functioning (ie, diet, supplements, sleep, and exercise) to help the
brain reach a more optimal performance level to help with improved physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning.
