The nonprofit organization Artis funds research trips to Israel for artists and curators, and it was on one of these expeditions that the curator Prem Krishnamurthy was taken with the work of Noa Eshkol — a modern dancer who developed a rigorously mathematical movement notation system and later made dynamic tapestry collages from
found scraps of fabric.

I've been quilting for a very long time and still
find it fascinating that a few simple
scraps of fabric can make such beautiful objects.

Gupta dwells on the secret inner lives
of worn - out vessels, discarded by their users for their state
of disrepair, by physically compressing each
found object into a sculptural grid interweaved with vibrant
scraps of found fabric.
Scraps of fabric, broken dishes, old jewelry, lost and
found objects: these are the materials that work their way into Graven's art.
Typical «
found objects» include natural materials like sand (see Sand Art), earth, stones, shells, curiously shaped pieces
of wood, a human skull; or man - made items such as newspaper cuttings, photographs, pieces
of glass, fragments
of scrap metal, pieces
of textile
fabric, an unmade bed, a bicycle handlebars, and so on.
On the opposite wall is a large - scale painting by Sterling Ruby — another artist with an almost mythological persona — incorporating
scraps of found fabric, and perched on a plinth, under a museum - style vitrine is a work by Cyprien Gaillard called Untitled (Tooth), 2013: literally one tooth from the giant maw
of a mechanical digger, transformed by this transposition into a somehow hieratic little figure.
Having trouble
finding clothing that would fit her in the Elsewhere Collection, Denton created a line
of plush, fat jewelry using
fabric scraps from her stacking sculpture.
Then there are the myopic little nitpickers, people who scurry about seeking little bits
of garbage in the
fabric of science (and
of course, there are such flaws everywhere), and when they
find some
scrap of rot, they squeak triumphantly and hold it high and declare that the science everywhere is similarly corrupt.
The next big goal for Pringle and Lewis is to
find a better use for all
of the
fabric scraps that are created in the process
of upcycling the garments.

The colors were woven through everything from our cute little polka dot paper plates I
found at Target, to our delicious packets
of Tazo tea and fun fruity cold drinks to our springy TJ Maxx tablecloths, loads
of fabric scraps for our craft making spring flower pins, and the absolutely gorgeous tulips and flowers we had in mason jars throughout the room.
I recently traveled to France and
found 1-1/2 yards
of gorgeous
fabric in a
scrap bin that I had made into pillows for my living room sofa, using fringe
found on
fabric.com.
I
