Raised by doting Baby Boomers with the notion that they could be anything they
dreamed of, Millennials made «follow your passion» a catchphrase for career inspiration, expecting to bask in the economic prosperity
of their forefathers and
find not only a
job, but a fulfilling one
at that.
And yet, as I progressed through high school and college, got a
job in full - time student ministry, and even traveled through Europe for a few weeks, checking each
of these
dreams off my list (sans Aussie heartthrob), I
found myself
at age twenty - four absorbed in feelings that I didn't expect to come for
at least another fifteen years, if ever.
It's a shame, because the subject
of our literally and figuratively eating shit to maintain a certain lifestyle deserves to
find articulation from mouthpieces more articulate than Linklater, Linklater favourite son Ethan Hawke, Bruce Willis, and Kris Kristofferson (performing the same function as Sam Elliot in the ultimately - as - useless but
at least wry Thank You For Smoking), oozing onto the screen and slinking off to the beat
of Linklater's patronizing compositions and interpolated cross-cutting
of burger exec Don (Greg Kinnear) watching porn in his posh hotel room and a dozen Mexican nationals sharing a motor - inn bunk while waiting to perform their ten - dollar - an - hour
dream jobs.
Nora seems to have shown a lot
of promise both in terms
of her career and love life, but she
finds herself stuck in an unfulfilling
job as a concierge
at a hotel and without a partner while her best friend seems to have managed (
at least on the surface) what she
dreamed of achieving.
