This made testing the battery during gaming an interesting dilemma as I spent a while debating whether to run games
at the
highest settings and tweak the power options so that it was delivering all the power it possibly could, but in the end I opted to keep the power plan
at its default
settings and drop the games I played down to achieve actually playable
framerates.
It's unbalanced, but put together very well, looks pretty and can handle most games
at quite
high settings, although those more intensive titles will need the
settings tweaked to maintain a good
framerate.
If you wish to crank up the graphics
settings, or run
at higher resolutions with
higher framerates, you'll want to equip your system with a faster GPU, such as the GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1080, or the even more powerful GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
While it holds its own
at Medium detail, upping the
settings to Very
High brings the
framerate to a standstill.
In everyday use, gamers can expect to max out the
settings in several modern titles when playing
at 1440p and still keep their
framerates at 60 FPS or
higher.
Alienware's compact PC stayed strong throughout the more demanding Metro: Last Light, with 1080p
framerates of 80 and 52
at low and
high settings, respectively.
That said, I played the game for review on a PlayStation 4 Pro, and if you have one I'd recommend using the
setting that prioritizes
framerate at 1080p — the
high - resolution mode is often unstable, and the frantic combat benefits greatly from the extra degree of smoothness.
