In Texas, the Department of Agriculture is the agency charged with enforcing
school nutrition standards, so it defies logic when the agency decides our kids need more sugary drinks and
fried foods at
school.
The Policy sets minimal nutritional standards for such
foods and additionally requires local wellness policies to address the following
in greater detail: limiting and eventually eliminating the
frying of
foods; portion sizes; eliminating «for sale» or free
foods and beverages that do not meet the state's Nutrition Policy Guidelines; eliminating
foods of minimal nutritional value; and programs such as
school gardens and farm to
school.
Although city
schools have recently made improvements to their menus, restricting trans fats and
fried foods, Illinois ranks fourth
in the nation for childhood obesity.
Whether Texas
schools will become awash
in deep -
fried food and other junk
food remains to be seen.

The basic tenets of good nutrition are sneaking their way into the public consciousness, especially
in school cafeterias, where concern is mounting about the typical fare of high - fat, deep -
fried foods frequently served for lunch.
If districts selling deep
fried snacks are caught doing so
in a
school food audit, they will have to pay back their federal meal reimbursements for each day the violations occurred.
Now, though, the Texas Department of Agriculture inexplicably wants to take a huge step backwards
in child nutrition by proposing: a return of deep fat
fryers to our
schools; a six-fold increase
in the number of allowed junk
food fundraising days; and the abolition of the «time and place» competitive
food restrictions that have served our children well for over a decade.
Instead we instituted a groundbreaking
school nutrition policy to remove the worst junk
food on our
school campuses, including a ban on deep fat
fryers and the imposition of common sense «time and place» restrictions on the sale of competitive
foods in the cafeteria during
school meal times.

Both of those practices have been banned
in Texas since 2004, and the sale of deep
fried food or soda to kids would directly run afoul of the federal regulations for
school meals and competitive
foods and beverages.

I remember when I was 8, the wife of the
school director was sharing a «treat» with a few lucky kids (I was among the very few):

in butter (don't know how she got that but I didn't ask)... I told you, we are talking about another
food and behavior paradigm... Of course, it is easy to remember this period of time with rosy lenses but really, what a change
in just 3 decades.
