These shows typically take one of two approaches: faithfully reconstructing an exhibition from the past (such as New York gallery Zwirner & Wirth's 2008 redo of Dan Flavin's 1964 exhibition at Green Gallery), or conceiving of a new project that uses a past exhibition as a conceptual jumping - off point (for example, When Attitudes Became Form Become Attitudes at San Francisco's CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in 2012, a contemporary riff on the famous Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form at Kunsthalle Bern in 1969).
Significant exhibitions include Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Boxes in December 1986, which opened just weeks before the artist's untimely death; She: Works by Richard Prince and Wallace Berman which brought together — for the first time — two generations of leading artists from different coasts; Bruce Conner: Work from the 1970s, which inspired the artist's first solo retrospective in Europe at the Kunsthalle Wien and Kunsthalle Zurich (2010).

In 2011 in New York, the gallery exhibited a selection of works by the artist curated by Flavin Judd drawn from his seminal 1989 exhibition held at the Kunsthalle Baden - Baden, Germany, and in 2013 a major installation by Judd was included in Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, the inaugural exhibition at David Zwirner's new 20th Street location in New York.
This Way or That Way will also feature prominently in a group exhibition titled Welcome to the Jungle at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf from March 2 through June 24, 2018.
Both of these acclaimed retrospectives have been appropriated by institutions and art historians for curatorial concepts, such as for the eponymous show From Surface to Space on Malevich at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden - Baden in 2008.
