This is an oppressive scenario, and The
Hunger Games, based on the first book in a trilogy of young adult books by Suzanne Collins (who co-wrote the screenplay with director Gary Ross and Billy Ray), is disconnected
from that reality setup, favoring the spectacle of its second act and seeming to buy into the very dangerous
game it attempts to critique.
THE
HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE is directed by Francis Lawrence,
from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael DeBruyn, based upon the novel «Catching Fire» by Suzanne Collins and produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik.
Catching Fire may be a slight improvement but it suffers
from the same weaknesses of The
Hunger Game offering plodding action sequel light on action.
