The Home Performance Index is aiming to do just that, gathering and sharing the data on best practice for a full range of indicators
from airtightness to lesser known benchmarks on waste management, sustainable procurement, ecology, water, and embodied carbon.

They studied the design of a 12» by 9» section of exterior wall
from a typical multifamily unit, comparing two versions of the wall: one using conventional construction and double - paned windows, the other employing Passive House thickness, insulation,
airtightness, and triple - paned glazing.
In a range of naturally ventilated homes with
airtightness ranging
from 5 to 20 ach @ 50Pa, winter air exchange rates were estimated to vary between 0.2 and 0.7 ach — and the ventilation rate was not closely related to
airtightness, which casts doubt on the long standing assumption that infiltration can be seen as part of the ventilation strategy.2
Central to the scheme's success has been the creation of simple, buildable details, a systematic project management approach and on - site training

airtightness taping around joist ends; new roof rafters insulated with Icynene spray foam insulation;
airtightness detailing to the roof, with Pro Clima Intello membrane under internal battening.
My main out take
from this disruptive commentary is that
airtightness really matters.
Architects would benefit considerably more
from reading this section of the book than by assuming they understand the Passivhaus Standard by way of the oft - quoted passivhaus energy consumption and
airtightness benchmarks.
Our next analysis swapped out a tra - ditional boiler for a high - efficiency (COP of 4.44) electric heat pump and, to our surprise, compliance could be achieved for all three house types with just the backstop values for insulation,
airtightness and renewable energy (Ireland's regulations for new homesmandate a renewable energy contri - bution of 10 kWh / m2 / yr thermal energy or 4 kWh / m2 / yr
from microgeneration).
(above, clockwise

airtightness detailing of key junctions using Siga tapes also visible; 150 mm Paratherm PIR insulation on the flat roof, part of a Moy extensive green roof system; a Kingspan Environmental rainwater harvesting system feeds garden garden taps at the development.
Optimal results are achieved by assisting your builder on site, ensuring unbroken continuity of insulation, thermal bridge control,
airtightness and wind - tightness
from phase to phase.
Airtightness comes primarily
from the internal wet plaster finish, together with Ampack's suite of tapes and membranes.
Construct Ireland, the magazine which evolved into Passive House Plus, featured two of his exemplary sustainable projects, perhaps most notably including a substantial mixed - use scheme on Galway's Forster Street
from 2006 that featured passive solar design, external insulation, triple - glazed curtain walling,
airtightness, MVHR and renewables amongst other measures.
