It occurred to me that if (as Cornel West and others have argued) it was the Enlightenment that created the category of race (dividing «white»
from «
black» and subordinating the latter to the former), it was also the Enlightenment that repressed the epistemological and religious significance of contemplation in the mystical theology of premodern
