It has been hypothesized that the reported beneficial health effects
from caloric restriction on excess body weight, cardiovascular risk factors, glucose metabolism, tumor physiology, neurodegenerative pathology and life span can be mimicked by alternating periods of short term fasting with periods of refeeding, without deliberately altering the total caloric intake.
Remember that they all reduced their caloric intake by the same amount, so the researchers concluded that calcium might aid in weight reduction — apart
from caloric restriction — and that dairy foods in general may contain other bioactive compounds that assist fat loss.
It's not exactly easy to hear in a world where snacks and packaged foods abound, but some studies have shown very positive benefits
from caloric restriction diets.

Chronic
caloric restriction consists in eating a reduced but balanced diet
from early adult life onward.
The scientists exposed a group of mouse lemurs to moderate chronic
caloric restriction (30 % fewer calories than their peers consuming a normal diet)
from the outset of early adulthood (Restrikal cohort, see visuals below).
The finding provides a central theory that may help researchers make sense of disparate results
from previous
caloric restriction studies, says Siegfried Hekimi, a geneticist at McGill University in Montreal.
Mixed results
from studies of primates suggest that
caloric restriction may make monkeys healthier but doesn't prolong their lives (SN: 8/1/09, p. 8; SN: 10/6/12, p. 8).
The rationale for using it came
from research on
caloric restriction, the world - champion method for making animals live longer.
The primary method of achieving weight loss was
caloric intake
restrictions, based on guidelines
from the American Diabetes Association.
A top resveratrol researcher
from Harvard, David Sinclair, found a few years ago that resveratrol may mimic the effect of
caloric restriction in humans.
Unfortunately, the study that showed benefits
from overall
caloric restriction also included a low - fat diet, often recommended for weight loss.

They expand to store energy in the form of triglycerides, to be used later as energy to supply our metabolic demands when calories
from food are limited (
caloric restriction or dieting).
The key is to support your mitochondria and train your body to handle hormetic stressors
from food,
from exercise,
caloric restriction, and other stressors.
The problem with trying
caloric restriction to force the body to burn fat is that it also burns protein when the glycogen and sugar stores have been depleted
from your liver and muscles.

To help prevent this

caloric restriction less as you get closer to your goal weight.
While it is true that the body will eventually revert to creating energy
from muscle proteins during times of prolonged
caloric restriction, this is unlikely to happen during a daily intermittent fast.

Much of the research included here comes
from studies on
caloric restriction and intermittent fasting.
But not in a) someone who is both stressed and leptin resistant, since increased leptin levels
from the re-feed might not be powerful enough to offset other excitatory pathways b) someone who is currently emerging
from yo - yo dieting or
caloric restriction c) someone who is dealing with an over-stimulated appetite, d) someone experiencing stress, e) someone who has had a history of insomnia, f) someone who is underweight, since they have low leptin levels, g) anyone who has ever had an eating disorder, particularly bulimia or binge eating disorder or h) anyone with HPA axis or endocrine dysregulation, particularly women, including overt stress, hypogonadism, hypothalamic amenorrhea, hypercortisolism, or hypocortisolism (adrenal fatigue.)
Now you may be seeing the benefits of
caloric restriction right now as your results seem to indicate that due to eating less calories your body has been able to recover
from some of its fat toxicity.
You need a break to allow your body to recover
from this stress, ramp metabolism back up, and stop compensating for the
caloric restriction.
The field is in it's infancy and, to date, the only thing that definitely works in species
from monkeys to mice is
caloric restriction (ref), and, perhaps, rapamycin - like drugs (ref).
