The pets might try and escape the area of
confinement if they have separation
anxiety and are separated
from their owner or left alone.
The condition may also be the result of abusive
confinement and lack of socialization, physical abuse, extended separation
from owners, constant aggression
from other pets in the household, and other sources of prolonged
anxiety or mental trauma.
Avoid using the crate as punishment, and avoid crating a dog who is experiencing
anxiety, whether that
anxiety stems
from the
confinement itself, separation
from a loved one, or
from environmental factors like a thunderstorm or other dogs.
For some, the behavior stems
from early excessive
confinement (in a crate or larger enclosure, or even in an outdoor penned area) combined with lack of enrichment, where eating feces developed due to hunger, boredom,
