Similarly, within
stocks, it's pretty clear that smaller companies and
emerging markets are dicier propositions than blue chip companies, so it seems reasonable to expect some extra return — even if the extra return
from small
stocks isn't as great as history suggests.
Reason being, while the US declined ~ 50 %
from its peak, many
emerging market stock exchanges declined 75 % or more.
Meanwhile, among international funds, the 15 - year failure rate varied
from 78 % for international small - cap funds to 95 % for
emerging -
market stock funds.
