Finding ways to cut
energy use has President Obama's backing, as well as a big push
from budget cuts
Predictably, most of the government funding opportunities in GrantsNet come
from the agencies with the largest research
budgets: the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation, the Department of
Energy, and NASA.
The total 2010
budget for the department as a whole would grow to $ 26.3 billion
from $ 24 billion in 2008; the projection for 2009 is $ 33.9 billion, plus a whopping $ 39 billion for
energy programs under the stimulus package recently passed and $ 1.6 billion for the Office of Science, which federal bureaucrats plan to spend primarily on building scientific facilities.
A bipartisan proposal
from two U.S. senators calls for boosting the Department of
Energy's (DOE's) science
budget by nearly 23 % over the next 2 years to $ 5.4 billion — a more generous raise than either Republicans or Democrats in the House of Representatives have proposed.
Much of next year's science funding won't come
from this
budget but
from the stimulus package, which contained $ 1.6 billion for the Office of Science and billions more for additional
energy R&D.
OTTAWA — Flush with revenues
from an unprecedented economic boom, the Canadian government last week unveiled a series of
budget initiatives that would reinvigorate academe while making major thrusts in high -
