from Stanford Online High School to specialized dropout prevention high schools run in partnership with community - based nonprofits toRocketship, which plows savings

From that line of thinking was born
Opportunity Culture, an initiative to try this idea: Let school teams with teachers on them redesign jobs and use age - appropriate technology to
extend the reach of excellent teachers and their teams to many more students, for more pay, within regular budgets, adding more planning time, and having them take full accountability for the
learning of all the students they serve.
By embracing the
opportunities presented by the natural environment, students can benefit
from outdoor
learning activities and
extend these projects to class - based activities and further
learning.

Aside
from their role serving as a «safe space» for students after school hours, today's Out - of - School - Time (OST) programs - which include after - school, summer, and other holistic
extended -
learning opportunities - are innovative, outcomes - based, and surprisingly diverse.
The foundation maintains an online library of lessons at www.wallacefoundation.org about what it has
learned, including knowledge
from its current efforts aimed at: strengthening educational leadership to improve student achievement; helping disadvantaged students gain more time for
learning through summer
learning and an
extended school day and year; enhancing out - of - school time
opportunities; and building appreciation and demand for the arts.
Additionally, the department provides
extended and accelerated
opportunities in arts - making and arts
learning, and to enhance the bridge
from elementary school to college and careers.
While no child wants to
extend their classroom day, these programs can play a crucial role in closing the
learning gap and opening up lifelong
opportunities for children
from underserved and underrepresented communities.
Hence, an expansion of the portability provisions for private schools would constitute a voucher program and divert investments
from our public schools, thereby affecting resources such as those for classroom instruction and curriculum, intervention services and
extended day
learning opportunities.
Suggestions range
from offering students an array of extracurricular activities and
extended - day
learning opportunities to establishing more meaningful accountability systems that encompass a variety of subjects and use multiple measures of student performance.
Expanding
learning - time programs that focus with all good intentions on remediation and tutoring, but that
extend traditional school structures into afterschool time, may experience weak attendance and missed
opportunities because these efforts are too often disconnected
from the rich
learning lives of today's youth.
Teachers seldom have the experiences other professions provide — regular, focused support
from experts in their field;
extended time to
learn and practice new methods; consistent
opportunities to use fine grained evidence to inform their work.
