Stocks are back on autopilot less than a week
from the first
Fed Reserve meeting under chairman Jerome Powell.
We can draw two conclusions
from the information conveyed in the two graphs above: 1) the
Fed is terrified of letting the
stock market move lower and, for now at least, has a solid iron floor beneath the
stock market; 2) the credit condition of corporate America has been deteriorating since early 2013, punctuated by 3 quarters in a row of declining earnings for the S&P 500.
He did so again in 2001 after the World Trade Center was attacked, when he led the FOMC to immediately reduce the
Fed funds rate
from 3.5 percent to 3 percent — and in the months that followed reducing that rate to as low as 1 percent as the economy and
stock markets remained sluggish.
Speculative credit
from U.S., Japanese and British banks to buy bonds,
stocks and currencies in the BRIC and Third World countries is a self -
feeding expansion, pushing up their currencies as well as their asset prices.
As the market took the new
Fed Chair's hawkish words at face value on Tuesday, which triggered the current leg lower in
stocks, we suspect a more dovish stance
from Mr. Powell that could be the perfect occasion for a short - covering bounce.
Meanwhile, Albert Edwards of SocGen suggested that there has been an excessive «move away
from equities» in recent years — instead of noting, for example, that the volume of U.S. government debt foisted upon the public (even excluding what has been purchased by the
Fed) has doubled since 2007, not to mention other sources of global debt issuance, while the market capitalization of
stocks has merely recovered to its previously overvalued highs.
However, with the Federal Reserve (
Fed) poised to begin raising rates as early as next month, investors will have to adjust to more modest returns
from U.S.
stocks as well as brace for heightened volatility.
As investor anxiety has shifted
from growth and geopolitical shocks to the
Fed, the correlation between
stocks and bonds has started to rise, and it's likely to continue rising as a
Fed rate hike nears.
Stocks tumbled again last week, as investors digested further evidence of slowing growth in China and numerous, somewhat conflicting statements
from various Federal Reserve (
Fed) officials.
One conclusion
from this episode is that learning about the
stock market may
feed back into the market and, by changing the behavior of the market, render our «learning» useless or — if we don't recognize the feedback effect — hazardous.
For example, if the
Fed wants to increase the
stock of bank reserves by, say, $ 100 billion (admittedly a mere trifle, these days), it has only to purchase $ 100 - billion worth of Treasury securities or other assets
from dealers in the secondary or «open» market.
Soon the
Fed will be forced to continue to raise interest rates in an attempt to save the dollar and stop inflation
from exploding; The first causality will be to exacerbate the crash of the Real Estate market; then comes the imploding of the
stock and bond markets, followed closely by the credit markets as the take - over and privatizing craze comes to an abrupt end.
But as the
Fed's
stock market «high - wire juggling act» continues, the valuation of the
stock market becomes increasingly dislocated
from the underlying economic and financial market fundamentals.
Powell has said he wants to keep the U.S. economy
from overheating, encapsulating the concern for traders: that the
Fed's rate increases might halt the upward trajectory of U.S.
stocks that have surged more than 70 % over the past five years, as measured by the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.
This data, which comes
from the
Fed every three years, shows the mean value of
stocks for families that have holdings in the market.
U.S.
stocks traded mixed on Tuesday, as markets weighed a strong signal
from Fed Chair Janet Yellen that interest rates will soon rise.
Shortly after, the
Fed announced the second round of its quantitative easing program, giving new life to
stocks that at the time had still been shaking off the dust
from the financial crisis.
This moral system appeals to students
