We are thankfully saved
from gratuitous shots of musical virtuosity in this film where most filmmakers would have indulged in them.

Moving away
from the horror elements of The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is an all - out war of car chases, fight scenes,
shoot outs, nuclear explosions and a phenomenal, if
gratuitous set piece where the Terminator blows up numerous police cars with a machine gun for no other reason than the script required an action beat.
There are far worse things — at least in terms of structure, tone, and unwise behavior
from characters who have proven themselves much smarter the rest of the time — in that finale, though, to keep us somewhat distanced
from the unnecessary horror unfolding (A
shot of someone being scalped only for the purpose of producing false tension is flagrantly
gratuitous).
And although there are a few
gratuitous boob
shots (including a convention - breaking one
from Whitlow) and some sincerely awful special effects that are, again, forgiven for being the product of borrowed invention, there's nothing at the centre of the exercise except an invitation to wallow in our youthful lack of critical facility.
