April Lane's work often brings her to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she monitors pollution
from natural gas production sites around the area's rich shale reserves.
Significant leaks of heat - trapping methane
from natural gas production sites would erase any climate advantage the fuel offers.
The study team believes this research, published Dec. 9 in Environmental Science & Technology, will help to provide a clearer picture of methane emissions
from natural gas production sites.

The government acknowledges this, stating in a recent report that total methane emissions
from natural gas sites have fallen 11 % since 2005, even as
natural gas production has exploded.
A team of researchers
from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and environmental testing firm URS reports that a small subset of
natural gas wells are responsible for the majority of methane emissions
from two major sources — liquid unloadings and pneumatic controller equipment — at
natural gas production sites.
The research team measured emissions
from 377
gas actuated (pneumatic) controllers at
natural gas production sites and a small number of oil
production sites throughout the U.S.
This work presents direct measurements of methane emissions
from multiple sources at onshore
natural gas production sites incorporating operational practices that have been adopted or become more prevalent since the 1990s.

This report found that direct measurements of methane emissions
from 190 onshore
natural gas sites in the United States indicate that methane emissions
from completed wells are are lower than commonly thought although the report also acknowledged that emissions
from pneumatic controllers and other equipment associated with
natural gas production facilities were higher than previously estimated.
Emissions
from natural gas production have dropped because of a 2012 EPA rule to cut VOCs
from gas sites, and the new strategy would extend the VOC reductions to new oil wells, too.
