Overall, roughly half the applications — and half of those accepted into the program — have come
from nontraditional candidates, meaning that they were coming to the program from outside education or from another part of the country.
The Pathways programs worked with 40 colleges and universities in 23 states to build effective strategies for recruiting, preparing and certifying teachers
from nontraditional candidate pools.

In a tight labor market, it is imperative to be open to
candidates from nontraditional backgrounds who may, for example, be new to the workforce, changing careers or taking on new roles, in order to determine whether they have transferable skills and desirable attributes.
It's not desirable because, unless we believe that
nontraditional candidates can not be effective, there will be times and places where the best
candidate is not licensed - and districts will nonetheless be barred
from hiring her.
