scientists targeting
other ones, for example sites that are at risk of loss
from climate change.»
He and
other scientists emphasized that this year's 50 percent rebound stemmed
from normal weather variations, not an unusual
climate shift.
Using statistically modeled maps drawn
from satellite data and
other sources, U.S. Geological Survey
scientists have projected that the near - surface permafrost that presently underlies 38 percent of boreal and arctic Alaska would be reduced by 16 to 24 percent by the end of the 21st century under widely accepted
climate scenarios.
A new study by
scientists from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and
other groups predicts that the effects of
climate change will severely impact the Albertine Rift, one of Africa's most biodiverse regions and a place not normally associated with global warming.
He spoke to
Climate Central
from a research boat taking weekly samples
from the six monitoring stations around the lake that keep track of temperatures, nutrient loads, dissolved oxygen and
other factors that can help
scientists track the lake's health.
In cooperation with
scientists from the Thünen - Institut and the Ecuadorian Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, a team
from TUM compared the predicted loss of area of tree species caused by deforestation on the one hand and by predicted forest losses in an extreme
climate change scenario on the
other.
Global warming became big news for the first time during the hot summer of 1988 when now - retired NASA
climate scientist James Hansen testified before Congress that the trend was not part of natural
climate variation, but rather the result of emissions of CO2 and
other greenhouse gasses
from human activities.
Similar frustrations, he said, led him and a group of
other climate experts to found the collective blog Realclimate.org several years ago, meant to bring timely and relevant
climate information direct
from scientists to the public.
When the foundation severed ties, its decision was less influenced by the removal of Jewish
scientists from major posts than by the destabilising effect that this and
other political interventions had on the general research
climate.
Talk about management by committee: one group of more than 800
scientist authors to cope with more than 9,000 scientific publications on
climate change and more than 20,000 comments
from «expert reviewers» (plus another 30,000 or so
from various
other interested parties.)
Sucking carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gases
from smokestacks and burying them underneath the ground is a key technology cited by politicians and
scientists as a way to help combat
climate change.
Scientists studying the potential effects of
climate change on the world's animal and plant species are focusing on the wrong factors, according to a new paper by a research team
from the Wildlife Conservation Society, University of Queensland, and
other organizations.
In September 2005, the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change, a United Nations organization that includes
scientists from nearly every country in the world, released a report estimating that 2 trillion tons of carbon dioxide could be stored in old coal mines, abandoned oil and gas fields, and in various
other geologic formations around the world.
Eberle and Kim said the early - middle Eocene greenhouse period
from 53 to 38 million years ago is used as a deep - time analog by
climate scientists for what could happen on Earth if CO2 and
other greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere continue to rise, and what a «runaway» greenhouse effect potentially could look like.
In order to predict future changes in
climate,
scientists verify and refine their models against paleoclimate data
from the ice cores Taylor and
others pull up.
He and
other report authors noted that
scientists trying to face threats such as global
climate change and the preservation of biodiversity face unwanted input
from special interest groups and political impedance, and countries that might be unequally affected by these threats have vastly different ideas of how to handle them.
Once the research team finishes plugging data
from other endangered species into his model, Colwell hopes to work out a definitive count that will allow
scientists to accurately assess threats
from invasive species, habitat conversion, and
climate change.
Coastal regions under threat
from climate change and sea - level rise need to tackle the more immediate threats of human - led and
other non-climatic changes, according to a team of international
scientists.
These are the erroneous predictions ascribed to the most recent report
from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC)-- a document reviewed by some 2,500
scientists and
other experts as well as vetted by more than 190 countries.
Now, if by impacts, he means the impacts to ecosystems, etc., it seems unlikely that
climate scientists jockeying for funding would be trying to change the topic of interest
from climate science to these
other fields (which I guess gets back to your point that funding self - interest would dictate continuing to emphasize uncertainty).
Other climate scientists, though, are wary of just how skillful such predictions can be and cautioned against drawing too firm a conclusion
from them.
I'm not even an amateur
climate scientist, but my logic tells me that if clouds have a stronger negative feedback in the Arctic, and I know (
from news) the Arctic is warming faster than
other areas, then it seems «forcing GHGs» (CO2, etc) may have a strong sensitivity than suggested, but this is suppressed by the cloud effect.
It's an idea spawned on Reddit, where several
scientists — concerned about the new president's policies on
climate change and
other issues, and hyped
from the success of the Women's March on Washington — were discussing the best way to respond to what they feared would be an administration hostile to science.
The
scientists carefully evaluated many aspects of the
climate in the four simulations, using measurements taken
from the area, data pulled together
from other studies, and data produced by the model.
Because I don't know enough science to debate contrarians scientifically, I usually fall back on: Suppose the mainstream
climate scientists are wrong & the contrarians right, and we act as if the
scientists are right, then we have nothing to lose & something to gain in terms of reducing
other environmental harms (acid rain, local pollution), resource depletion, and increasing national security (re oil wars & protection), and lots of money to save
from energy / resource efficiency & conservation, and increasing
from alternative energy.
Over the past several years,
scientists from many institutions have explored the ability of SP - CAM to simulate tropical weather systems, the day - night changes of precipitation, the Asian and African monsoons, cloud - aerosol interactions and
other climate phenomena.

So what do you do when you have 250 more years» worth of a convenient, cheap fuel in the ground (at current rates of use) and
scientists are saying big
climate impacts await
from continued use here and in China and
other countries with vast reserves?
Surely it would be correct to say that the «300 eminemt
scientists and
other qualified individuals
from around the world» are actually in total disagreement when it comes to evaluating «
climate facts»?
Aside
from government - ordered muzzling on

climate scientist Heidi Cullen and two biologists
from the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.
I think
climate scientists know about these, but can't really make definitive claims, so they don't get into peer - reviewed articles much... or else
other scientists might attack them with ferocity (even substracting denialists
from the equation here).
«The scientific talent leading these studies, the partnership with industry and access to their facilities, and the diverse research methods used, gives us the confidence that when the project concludes in late 2014, we'll be able to greatly increase our understanding of the
climate impacts of switching to natural gas
from other fossil fuels, through this unprecedented collective research effort,» said EDF Chief
Scientist Steve Hamburg.
I'm on my way to a meeting in Sicily where several dozen
