I think it is the fact that Darwin is operating
from this theory of evolution that has a sub-theory about the necessity of
outcrossing that leads him.
Sex is costly, and thus the question arises as to why C. neoformans or C. albicans would undergo inbreeding / selfing unisexual reproduction, which would limit the amount of genetic diversity inherited
from the parents, as opposed to a-α sexual reproduction, which promotes
outcrossing and genetic exchange.
On the other hand, «linecrossing» is a form of
outcrossing where dogs
from unrelated lines are bred to produce a new line.
