Stripping away the effect of fresh
food and energy, consumer
prices rose 0.4 percent in January
from a year ago.
The flat growth in the core consumer
price index (CPI), which includes oil products but excludes volatile fresh
food prices, matched a median market forecast and followed a 0.1 %
rise in December, data
from the Internal Affairs Ministry showed on Friday.
But
price rises also moderated for other items such as television sets and processed
food, a sign the increase in import costs
from previous yen falls was dissipating.
Though the financial crisis offered immediate relief
from rising food and energy
prices, it also helped lay the groundwork for a supply shortage in its wake.
On Friday the Labor Department announced that the core consumer
price index (CPI)-- which strips out volatile

rose 2.3 % over the past 12 months, up
from 1.8 % one year ago.

[As] concerns over
rising food prices subsided [
from the second quarter], political stability is now the second highest concern after recent high - profile demonstrations and as politics [dominates] the media headlines,» Richard Hall, country manager of Nielsen Malaysia, told CNBC in an e-mail interview.
Any shortfall would lead to
rising food prices that would hit the world's poor hardest, as has already occurred
from price increases of recent years.
The latest data show Japan's core consumer
price index (excluding fresh
food)
rose 1.0 % year - on - year in February, accelerating
from a gain of 0.9 % in January.
The thinking is that the economy is likely to overheat, forcing the Federal Reserve to have to hike interest rates quickly to prevent inflation, where
prices rise rapidly on everything
from rents to
food to gas.
The core index, which excludes
food and energy
prices,
rose 0.2 percent, unchanged
from September.
Charges add up while the cost of living constantly
rises,
from higher bank fees and insurance premiums to
rising property taxes and commodity and
food prices.
The
price of
food continues to
rise and even the dirt to make the cookies, which comes
from the country's central plateau, has gone up in cost.
When infant formula
prices rise, the cost of a WIC
food package increases, fewer people can be served and some people must be removed
from the rolls, «so there is real consumer injury, «he said.
«The challenge of feeding growing populations healthily while minimising environmental damage - particularly as
food and fuel
prices continue to
rise - should remind governments that this is not a time to step away
from tackling our
food system,» he said.

from windmills and solar PV, both of which need big subsidies, and electric cars which cost more, have a high environmental impact and don't meet most people's use cases, biofuels causing
food prices rises, and a lot of hand - waving about reduction in demand and insulation.

from the ethanol subsidies, claiming biofuel production only accounted for 2 - 3 % of the
