This
diversity gap between students and
teachers creates a divide
from the very beginning of a student's education that stifles progress and doesn't empower them to overcome the low socioeconomic backgrounds they often come
from.
To sum up,
teachers need to support sustainable alternatives to neoliberal capitalism with its emphasis on economic growth; protect nature's resources for future generations; protect ecosystems and help support biodiversity; support a community based economics, and a grassroots democracy that includes participatory and direct forms, embody anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic pedagogies that respect
diversity and work
from a post-patriarchal perspective.

The team sought to share and understand their own experiences with racial inequity in education, reflect on the perspectives of students of color who experience a lack of
diversity within their
teacher community, and research a range of factors that contribute to the gap,
from teacher recruitment through school climate.
That initial list has been revised with input
from hundreds of

The first program highlighted is taken directly

from a number of organizations for its selectivity and commitment to

In most states, there is a large and growing gap between the percentage of students of color1 and the percentage of
teachers of color.2 Efforts to increase
teacher diversity have led to marginal increases in the percentage of
teachers of color —
from 12 percent to 17 percent
from 1987 through 2012 — but this positive statistic obscures other troubling facts, such as the decline in the percentage of African American
teachers in many large urban districts and the lower retention rates for
teachers of color across the country.3
Higher GPA requirements took effect this past year in New Jersey, 87 and such changes will take effect in Alabama in fall 2017.88 For this reason, it is not yet known how or whether these changes will affect the
diversity of students enrolling in and graduating
from teacher preparation programs.
Reflecting the
diversity of
teacher leadership efforts, members are asked to select
from a broad list of categories for their idea.
There have now been a few successful lawsuits brought to challenge various versions of these tests, with rulings centering on tenuous connections between the skills being tested and those necessary to do the job.120 To address some of these underlying concerns, the TeachNY Advisory Council, supported by a grant
from the New York State Department of Education, drafted policy recommendations in May 2016 around
teacher preparation recruitment, selection, and cultural competence in the hopes of finding ways to improve
teacher quality and
diversity.121
Recognizing the need to create spaces within professional networks to discuss and unpack the challenges and possibilities for increasing
teacher diversity, the institute offers presentations on current research, opportunities to plan in working groups, and panel sessions focused on best practices
from teacher preparation and

A study by the Brookings Institution found that at every stage in the process to become a

from those entering training programs to
teachers who voluntarily leave the profession — there are gaps that contribute to a lack of

teacher candidates with few opportunities to analyze student writing
from a
diversity of classroom contexts and to benefit
from experienced
teachers» insights about responding to student writers.

from science, math, social studies, physical education, and English Language Arts, the videos demonstrate how globally - minded
teachers foster the dispositions of global competence: openness, respect, empathy, appreciation for
diversity, valuing of multiple perspectives, and commitment to equity worldwide.

from the earliest ideas about charter schools, may hold the best hope for improving charter schools — and thereby illuminate a path for strengthening our entire system of public education.

from the preservice
teachers rendered numerous examples of statements demonstrating the understanding of empathy as a result of their experience in the
diversity simulation.
When students have a
diversity of
teachers, they benefit
from the wealth of experiences that each one brings to the classroom.
Teachers can create classrooms that celebrate language
diversity and encourage children
from diverse linguistic backgrounds to relish and revel in their home language.
Teacher Diversity Efforts in Boston Michelle Healy Boston Public Schools identifies and offers «letters of reasonable assurance» of future employment to promising black applicants and students about to graduate
from a
teachers college.
Literacy is deeply rooted in cultural experience, and our society presents
teachers with a broad and rich
diversity of children whose cultural experience may differ considerably
from their own.
