We discovered in this work that two Mucoromycotina species have novel
fucose sugar composition in their cell walls which is not found in other Fungi.
Three enzymes were needed to synthesise SLex: galactosyltransferase to combine a glucose and a galactose sugar ring; sialyltransferase, to attach the sialyl group; and then finally fucosyltransferase to add
a fucose sugar ring.
