Many of the same warnings Mario Cuomo heard in the 1980s about Shoreham are the same ones his son hears today from supporters of Indian Point: Closing a nuclear
plant will result in blackouts, a less reliable electric grid and increased air pollution as fossil
fuels are burned to replace the lost emissions - free nuclear
power; customers could face higher bills;
more than 1,000 jobs will be lost, and tax revenue for schools and towns will dissipate.

According to our analysis, this would generate
more than enough electricity to
power the biorefinery, so surplus
power could be sold back to the grid, displacing electricity produced from fossil
fuels — a practice already used in some
plants in Brazil to produce ethanol from sugarcane.
Combination of economic trends and policies Still, for now an array of Obama administration actions and economic trends are conspiring to cut emissions, according to EIA: Americans are using less oil because of high gasoline prices; carmakers are complying with federal
fuel economy standards; electricity companies are becoming
more efficient; state renewable energy rules are ushering wind and solar energy onto the
power grids; gas prices are competitive with coal; and federal air quality regulations are closing the dirtiest
power plants.

Of course that will have «upsides and down sides» — not only environmental, but social and economic, and some people will experience
more of the upside (e.g. rural villages in Africa and India benefiting from off - grid PV) and some will experience
more of the downside (e.g. investors in large, centralized fossil
fuel or nuclear
power plants that will not be able to compete with dirt - cheap PV).

more time» by adding new fossil
fuel fired
power plants when new capacity is required (regardless of what James E. Hansen thinks of this option).
Understanding the significance of this last fact relies on the appreciation that displacing all fossil
fuel power plants with solar and wind farms, while necessary in curbing the flow of additional greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, does nothing to capture the prevailing stock of greenhouse gases accumulated from 150 years of industrialization and that will remain in the atmosphere for upwards of a hundred or
more years to come.
[7] Indeed, what they are advocating for is construction of vast new fossil
fueled power plant capacity as a way to provide cheap CO2 to facilitiate extraction of
more oil.

more CO2 than coal
plants and to this writer it seems strange that the UK will look to North and South America to supply them with biomass
fuel that requires processing and shipment thousands of miles, when they (Drax) could use locally mined coal to generate
power.
Nuclear defenders are calling for keeping things in perspective — fossil
fuels, they point out, have many
more costs and risks associated with them than nuclear
power; and newer generation reactor designs are far safer than those built in Japan many decades ago (a number of US
plants from the same era have the same or similar designs).
