That said, if there's truly no risk
of new fossil
fuel projects being developed where you
live, perhaps you're better off focusing your efforts on demanding 100 % renewable energy for all, ensuring local
government or other institutions are divested from fossil
fuels, or pursuing some
of the other options outlined on this website.
Civil society,
governments and business communities must accept that if we do not change the way we
live on this planet and do something to reduce drastically the carbon footprint and increase dramatically access to renewable energy now through tougher regulations and an overhaul
of the fossil
fuel industry (stop subsidizing the polluters and begin funding the human solutions to climate change), the planet will continue to change in devastating ways.
A second horrific error has been made by environmental organizations, many developed country
governments, and the United Nations by promoting reductions in the emissions
of CO2 from burning fossil
fuels to obtain energy that has made possible the high standard
of living now found in developed countries.
The US
government, they said, has knowingly continued to worsen the effects
of climate change through the burning
of fossil
fuels, and thus has risked «harm to human
life, liberty and property.»
Our opportunity here isn't only about protecting the ocean waters
of America, marine
life, a favorite surf break, jobs or a given beach community; it's about demanding that our
government utilize the best available science and data and listen to the massive outpouring
of public opposition to destructive offshore oil and gas development, to shift the tides
of energy development instead away from fossil
fuels and toward renewables; it's about holding our President and federal agencies accountable for decisions they make about the management
of the ocean; it's about protecting the ocean and every coastline from the atrocity and injustice
of offshore drilling and exploration; it's about protecting clean water, air and beaches now and for the future; it's about protecting one another, and the Earth.
By participating fully at this stage, our opposition front will have standing for solid recourse should the Trump Administration's proposed program still contain waters off from coasts, where science and data concur with the massive outpouring
of Americans who are rising up from every walk
of life to demand
government accountability in moving away from fossil
fuels and toward a renewable energy future.
What vested interest could the
government have in persuading people that the fossil
fuels that have made our way
of life possible now threaten our future and our children's future?
FoE knew what it was asking for: for policies that would make
life difficult for people, and it knew that the
government wasn't capable
of, or interested in, solving the problem
of fuel poverty in any meaningful way.
