During the
Industrial Revolution, the burning of wood and other traditional materials for
fuel was replaced by the burning of coal and later oil and natural gas — so - called fossil
fuels.
These actions are needed to spur innovation in energy efficiency and renewable energies, and thus to stretch oil and gas supplies to cover the need for mobile
fuels during the transition to the next phase of the
industrial revolution «beyond petroleum».
Nearly a quarter of all fossil -
fuel carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions since the dawn of the
industrial revolution occurred
during 2001 - 2010 (see chart below).
