The seals are further protected by international agreements, and
fur seal populations are recovering.
The northern
fur seal population has been in decline in recent years and they are listed as «vulnerable» under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
«If it continues, if this is the new normal, the sea lion population and
the fur seal population in California are going to have severe drops in their overall population,» Johnson said.

fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) successfully recolonized San Miguel Island after the local
population was extirpated by hunting.
Staggering
populations of over 70,000 California sea lions, 5,000 northern
fur seals, 50,000 northern elephant
seals and 1,100 harbor
seals breed and pup on the island each year.
But it is its
population of 10,000 + Guadalupe
fur seals (Arctocephalus townsendi)- their only major breeding site - and northern elephant
seals (Mirounga angustirostris) that attract the sharks.
The islands became a base for pirates, and later whalers, who also harvested the island's abundant
fur seals, and put a significant dent in the tortoise
population.
The fiord is rich in flora and fauna and outstanding Waterfalls; at times sighting of local wildlife as dolphins (Doubtful Sound is home to one of the southernmost
