Nearly two years after an IBM supercomputer named Watson stole the spotlight on Jeopardy! by beating two human champions, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy will become the first university in the world to receive its own version of Watson, to help
further computer science research.

Unfortunately for the Japanese labour markets, as with many other countries, many young intellectuals seek
further study elsewhere in countries like the UK that have renowned Universities and
research facilities, taking a large portion of the skilled labour force the Japanese markets need, into other areas of work such as
research and academia, a less hands on field that benefits the
computer science industry on the whole but does not help specific firms achieve their targets directly.
The
research, which was supported by the National
Science Foundation and reported October 11th in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, involved building a
computer model to simulate the interaction between the two facets of a folded sheet, including how easily and how
far the folds would bend and how much the flat planes would deform during movement.
In the last 3 decades or so, as universities created new mathematics - based institutions that bring together the different disciplines — institutes of technomathematics (with
computer science and engineering) and interdisciplinary centers for computational mathematics (which include the methods used in industrial
research in their focus)-- these differences have shrunk still
further.
Professor Peter McOwan from QMUL's School of Electronic Engineering and
Computer Science, and co-author of the study, said: «This
research is important, as it provides
further evidence that
computers can be used as aids in creative tasks.
Improvements in
computer memory can be expected to have
far - reaching effects on all areas of
science and technology, especially by facilitating and extending the application of big data and data
science in areas from genomic
research to clinical medicine to increasingly general artificial intelligence applications.
Further research is needed to explore ways to help
science teachers effectively integrate educational
computer games in the classroom with a focus on standards alignment.
