The babies should be
gaining at least an ounce per day five days postpartum.

As long as the baby has six to eight wet diapers and
at least two bowel movements in a 24 hour period (under six weeks of age), and your baby is
gaining weight (
at least 4
ounces a week) you can be assured your baby is getting enough milk.
If your baby is back up to birthweight by 2 weeks of age, or
at the very
least gaining half an
ounce to an
ounce per day (4 - 8
ounces per week in the early weeks), this is all good news.
Babies that are growing well often
gain at least 6
ounces (170 grams) a week and have wet diapers
at least every 6 hours.
After the first two weeks, newborns should be
gaining at least 5 - 7
ounces each week.
Weight
gain should also pick up within 24 hours of this increase in milk production, so your baby begins to
gain at least half an
ounce (15 g) a day.
But, because they were
gaining at least half an
ounce to an
ounce per day (about 4 - 8
ounces per week), I didn't worry, and neither did their pediatrician.
Most newborns lose
at least several
ounces in the first couple of days before they start to
gain.
