The metallicity of the gases in the protocluster
galaxies was studied using multiple
spectral lines emitted from them.
Indeed, its Lyman - alpha spectrum, i.e. one of the
spectral lines of hydrogen it emits, is much narrower and stronger than that of most
galaxies, therefore confirming her theoretical predictions.
Astrophysicist Paul Westoby and colleagues from Liverpool John Moores University in the U.K. used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to survey
spectral lines from 360,000 relatively nearby
galaxies.
Redshift of the
spectral lines in the light from a
galaxy reflects its velocity relative to our
galaxy.
The resulting
spectral lines from the entire
galaxy blend together to form a FAT
line.
The groups reported the presence of a previously undetected
spectral line, with an energy of 3.5 kiloelectron volts (keV), in x-ray light from distant
galaxies and
galaxy clusters.
Infrared light, on the other hand, traces dust in a
galaxy, and emission
lines that are detected in
spectral lines trace the gas clouds.
Figure 02: The «Moment 1» panel shows the change of velocity across the
galaxy, indicating a smooth rotation, while «Moment 2» gives the
spectral line's width, here showing a broad
line toward the turbulent star - forming nuclear bar and more ordered motion in the arms themselves.
