People who've
experienced traumatic
experiences have especially high risk for addiction, in many cases because they use alcohol,
other drugs, or behaviors like
gambling to cope with their bad feelings.
It's important for people
experiencing gambling problems or
other expressions of addiction to consider how their life histories, especially traumatic
experiences, might be influencing their current behavior.
This workshop is inappropriate for couples
experiencing: Severe relationship distress, significant emotional or physical abuse, serious emotional or physical abuse, relationships where one partner is seriously addicted to drugs or alcohol, and relationships with serious compulsive behavior with
gambling, sexual action out, and
other disruptive behaviors.
Many people who
experience problems with
gambling will also
experience other issues and are likely to present to a range of helping professionals for assistance.
People with
gambling problems also exhibit a greater likelihood of
experiencing a range of
other health compromising behaviours.
It now asks a number of questions about people's
experiences of unemployment, crowding in their house,
experiences of racism and grief, relationship breakups,
gambling, and so on, as well as about community activity, education and
other possible protective factors.
