Bioshock was notable for having a stronger narrative than most mainstream
games, utilising environmental details and
audio logs that players could choose to stop and listen to.
Regardless of whether its cut scenes, dialogue interactions or the found letters /
audio logs, the writing may be one of the
game's weakest aspects.
There are
audio logs to be found once again; filling in plenty of the back story, and, with its strong cast of characters, this intriguing and mysterious storyline is certainly one of the strongest reasons to continue playing the
game.
One issue I had with the first
game that seems to have carried over is that of collectible documents, which read out like
audio logs, but can not be played in the background.
It's primarily a vehicle for unlocking extras in Dead Space 2 when it ships — those extras being a hack suit with bonus perks, a weapon skin, bonus
audio logs, and extra power nodes, health packs, and credits within the
game — but you also get a little extra back story setup for Dead Space 2 with a few mini
games mixed in.
Dead Space, for example, is almost identical in its storytelling: almost no cutscenes are utilized, all dialog is spoken in -
game, and dozens of
audio / video
logs develop the
game's mysterious backstory.
What is surprising, however, is that the level of voice acting provided in the
game's
audio log collectibles not only provide some of the most endearing stories in the
game, but also deliver some top quality voice acting.
Not every
game needs to be BioShock, and not every
game needs to tell its story through
audio logs; however,
games do need to remember that it's not what a
gamer sees, but what a
gamer does that defines an experience.
Another cool feature is that
audio logs are played directly from the DualShock 4 Controller too which adds to the overall enjoyment factor of the
game.
These parts of the
games are really just for the fans I feel, the
game does offer
audio logs for you to catch up on what has happened in the previous
games but you have to go out of your way to find them.
You periodically find notes &
audio logs (ala every old - school horror
game ever) that fill you in on the story and at the end of each zone, you're given a puzzle (so far, they've just been lame «Put these things in the right order» puzzles) which you gain bonus money if you manage to complete it with no help (if you get stuck, you can ask for hints which lowers the reward).
Seeing as I hold the plot in high esteem, I found myself particularly pleased whenever I uncovered such
audio logs; much more so than other such
games that feature similar concepts.
Stretch goals are rewards that incentivise people to keep donating after a Kickstarter has reached its goal and means that we will be receiving Mac and Linux versions of the
game (in addition to the PC, Xbox One and eventual PS4 versions), new areas, new crew members and new
audio logs.

There are countless notes to read and
audio logs one can listen to, but due to my lack of interest in the
game's story, and most of its characters, I kept ignoring them more and more.
In the previous
games, the dead drop
audio logs not only added to the overall experience, but they were interesting to discover, as Cole's power allowed him to hone in on their power sources.
Indeed, these
