Square Enix is thinking about money... and which console sold most of their games... the 3ds... so do not be surprised every big game from Square Enix and other Japanese developers come to the NX... and if they are anything like CAPCOM they will rather save money and make their game for one console aka the NX like they do with Monster Hunter... me personally I can not wait to see all my favorite games on the 3ds in better graphics... i am a RPG lover and the 3ds have some classics that I love... only thing Nintendo have to worry about is how Western and European side of the world will feel about the new handheld... Japan will love it, handheld sell the most, so it wont take long for NX to pass ps4 sales... but if they can get the attention of western and european... then Sony have reasons to worry and their fans

All MS can do right now is hope to capitalize on those who absolutely need the best looking versions of games, and in the real world, that amounts to a rather small portion of the market, and I'd wager a lot of them already own a system, if not a PS4P, so hoping they drop $ 500 on a console isn't going to drive any long term sales.

Just like the majority right now is going on large sales and bundling to their heart's content, if a majority did business like this the initial revenue would probably stagnate and be much lower than expected, but after the consumers got into their heads that the games they wanted would NOT follow the expected process, revenue would increase and maybe allow for less waste of resources on support (as you say) or channel them to good marketing campaigns that don't hurt either the consumers or the developers.

Activision, I'm telling you right now; not properly supporting versions of your games is the QUICKEST way to ensure that sales of those versions stay low for the entirety of their time on the market.
