Gas hydrates are expected to make up a significant portion of the energy mix once existing oil
fields dwindle, Scott says.
Prior to the 1970s,
hydrates were thought of only as nuisances, because they can plug oil and
gas pipelines in the
field.
Two years ago, in a kind of crater off the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 10,000 feet down, a team led by Myriam Sibuet of the French Research Institute for Ocean Exploitation, discovered a spectacular cold seep with a vast
field of clams and mussels, blue shrimp, purple sea cucumbers, and six - foot - long tube worms growing in bushes next to mounds of
gas hydrate.
Gas hydrates — a mixture of ice and methane — are found only under high pressure and at cold temperatures, and they are expected to make up a significant portion of the energy mix once existing oil
fields dwindle, says David Scott, manager of the Northern Resources Development Program for Natural Resources Canada.
She heads the
gas hydrates program at a U.S. Geological Survey
field center in Woods Hole, Mass., and was not involved in the new work.
First indications about relic
hydrates existence in permafrost of West Siberia (Yamburg
gas field area) have been documented at the end of 80 - ties — beginning of 90 - ties of 20th century.

Researchers at Southern Methodist University will conduct numerical modeling,
field data collection, and extensive laboratory analyses to characterize the state of the upper boundary of pressures and temperatures where
gas hydrates are in a stable form on the Alaskan Beaufort continental slope.
These new projects, managed by the Energy Department's National Energy Technology Laboratory, will focus research on
field programs for deepwater
hydrate characterization, the response of methane
hydrate systems to changing climates, and advances in the understanding of
gas -
hydrate - bearing deposits.
Applications are sought that utilize data from past scientific
field experiments (for example, the Mt. Elbert and Iġnik Sikumi tests in Alaska; Mallik tests in Canada) to (1) provide insight into the design of future
field production experiments and (2) elucidate the nature of
gas -

Projects are to utilize existing
field data, and / or collect
field data (including log, core, and remote sensing data) to evaluate the occurrence, nature, and behavior of
gas hydrate geologic systems.
Also, there seems to be a regional layer of methane
hydrate, encountered when drilling at multiple
gas fields, at about 100 meters in depth.
If there is a shallow layer of high salt terrestrial methane
hydrate that causes
gas blowouts, encountered at multiple
gas fields in Siberia, that is a previously uncounted phenomenon.
