The pipeline would
take natural
gas extracted
from hydraulic fracturing («fracking») in West Virginia and
over environmentally sensitive areas.
These incidents include
over three - hundred unreported spills
from 2012 to 2013, several significant leaks of oil and polluted saltwater into streams and farmland in the six months prior to the latest train derailment (see here and here), a decade - old saltwater spill which is still being cleaned up coupled with a pipeline rupture discovered in September 2013 which will
take another four years to clean, and a natural -
gas pipeline explosion across the border in Canada, which impacted
gas availability in several U.S. states during the winter of 2014 (see here and here).
The Obama administration
took a heavy swing in the ongoing battle
over fracking today by imposing new rules that would, for the first time, restrict the release of smog - causing pollutants
from natural
gas wells.
Senator Richard Madaleno (D - 18) stated: «We can't allow Trump officials to
take over protecting our state
from the dangers of fracked -
gas pipelines — it would be like asking the fox to protect the henhouse.
That is equal to the greenhouse
gases from electricity use in 7.9 million American homes or
taking over 13 million cars off the road.
Over all, the oil and
gas sector will see its emissions rise by 46 megatonnes, after
taking into account expected reductions
from pipelines, refining and the production of non-oil-sands crudes.
Take what you have learned
from the scientists and imagine the world in a few decades
from now, a few degrees warmer, with all the extreme weather, desertification, ocean acidification, mass migration, conflict
over energy supplies, fresh water and so on, that have already begun, and that will only get worse the more we destabilize our climate system with greenhouse
gases.
