Probably the most common cause of that is a
head gasket with a leak between the two, which could be caused by high compression / detonation (there are several possible causes for that including incorrect ignition timing, low octane gasoline), an engine overheat, uneven
head bolt torques and / or a defective
head gasket.
It's been suggested that, when I replace the valve cover
gasket, I make sure that the
head bolts are torqued correctly as they could have loosened up when the engine got hot.

You'll generally need a decent manual, a
gasket set & new
head bolts, a Torque wrench and a selection of sockets, and make sure to follow the loosening / tightening sequence given in the manual.

For the 2012 model, the biggest improvements made on the engine was replacing a cast iron exhaust manifold, six
bolts, a
gasket, and a heat shield and three
bolts, with an integrated exhaust manifold cylinder
head.
That engine had a problem with cylinder
head bolts breaking, which could cause the
head gaskets to leak.
The car lasted 180k miles before the
head bolts ended up stripping and the
head gasket blew.
