The auto transmission is good; it's smooth with precise shift points and doesn't come across as hunting for the right gear.

«The transmissions are pretty respectable too, the manual shifts crisply and the engagement point is smooth, gears are well placed to work with the slightly heady engine and spirited driving is downright fun.

With Corolla's new CVTi - S, Toyota's engineers improved the drivability of the new Corolla by adapting discrete stepped «gears» or shift points, into the car's acceleration and deceleration curves.

When you press the ECT button and switch to the «power» mode, the transmission electronically moves up the shift points in order to stay in each gear a little longer.

In addition, the PCM uses the air flow readings to determine the shift points of the automatic transmission; so if the air flow sensor doesn't work properly, the automatic transmission might shift gears differently.

Tow / Haul mode adopted; Mode is part of a gear - shifting point control system that switches the AI - SHIFT uphill / downhill control and electronic throttle non-linear characteristics to the settings most suitable for towing, in addition to automatically downshifting during acceleration even when the brakes are applied

At maximum engine speed it merely shifted up to the next gear automatically, but didn't shift up again immediately if the driver manually dragged the lever back at the same point in time.

Moving to mode 2 and 3 progressively speeds up the shifts and adjusts the shift points to allow the engine to build more power before moving on to the next gear.

This new series of engines with 988cc of engine displacement and a fuel tank capacity of 35 litres is fitted with front type suspension, three point control arm and gas - filled McPherson struts that enhance stability of the vehicle while in drive, and also makes the process of shifting gears considerably smoother, because of the cable - type gear shift mechanism.

Paddle shifters on the steering wheel control programmed shift points for the e-CVT rather than actual gear changes, but I found these fake shifts quick and convincing.
