The car coped well although on long inclines
the gearbox kicked down automatically and you could hear the engine working hard.
However, the auto has its shortcomings because it's hesitant in its responses, so you have to plan ahead if you're pulling away at roundabouts, while
the gearbox kicks down readily when you accelerate.

The
gearbox shuffles its ratios almost seamlessly when left in «drive», and the D3 is notably happier to hang onto ratios than the standard 335d, which tends to
kick down a bit too readily.
It also makes for instant responses when you ask the
gearbox to
kick down and the engine to get on with it.
Most of the time you don't get the advantage of the instant torque from the electric motor, instead, before there's any acceleration, the
gearbox needs to
kick down to the correct gear as the electronics decide just how much of each power source it wants to use.
Although most automatic
gearboxes allow you to «
kick down» — press the accelerator briefly and firmly to tell the
gearbox to change
down — and some offer the option of selecting gears with buttons or paddles, automatics are generally not considered as responsive as manuals.
The problem with driving in «Comfort» is that when you need that burst of power, you are usually in a gear too high and have to wait for the
gearbox to
kick down.
Put the Volvo into Power mode and that delay is almost completely eradicated, with only a hesitancy typical of any automatic
gearbox as it
kicks down a cog or two of the eight available.
That's not to say it isn't fast — it is — but there's a slight lack of drama and excitement, including the sound, while the
gearbox is a little hesitant when you
kick down, too.
What's more, the shifts from the ZF 8 - speed
gearbox are smooth enough to be imperceptible; however, there is some hesitancy to
kick -
down in D.
However, the
gearbox isn't suited for aggressive driving and there are times when we could feel that it was confused for a few seconds, especially in
kick -
down mode.
The nine - speed automatic
gearbox is also very smooth, so even when it does
kick down to accelerate there's little hesitation.
In snow mode it reins in the power, makes standing starts smoother and slower, and tells the
gearbox to do everything it can to shift early and avoid
kicking down.
The PDK is quick - shifting and positive, but even when switched to what should be full manual mode, the
gearbox will
kick down if the throttle détente is pushed past.
For passes, the
gearbox would
kick down a couple of gears in short order.
Output from the 2.0 - liter turbo is crisp and the eight - speed automatic
kicks down faster than most
gearboxes — picking up the pace was never an issue.
