Defense of Corning in Massachusetts state and federal court product liability actions alleging rheumatologic and immunologic disorders allegedly caused by silicone
gel breast implants
Not exact matches
The FDA states that, «although there are currently no established methods for accurately detecting silicone levels in
breast milk, a study measuring silicon (one component in silicone) levels did not indicate higher levels in
breast milk from women with silicone
gel - filled
implants when compared to women without
implants.»
There are two different types of
implants that are used during a
breast implant procedure: silicone
gel and saline solution.
Silicone chemistry is extremely complex; the polymer involved in the covering and the interior of the
breast implant consists of a polymer of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms with methyl groups attached to the oxygen groups (methyl polydimethylsiloxane).19 The length of the polymer determines whether it is a solid,
gel, or liquid.
Approximately 800000 to 1 million women in the United States have received
breast implants containing silicone (elemental silicon with chemical bonds to oxygen) in the
implant envelope or in the envelope and the interior
gel.
I later found out from another plastic surgeon that the
implant had not just «contracted» (which was a very typical outcome) but it had also ruptured — so I had unknowingly fed my baby girl
breast milk that may have been tainted by silicone
gel and the many chemicals that are used to make the silicone!
Reconstruction operations with
implants involves the use of prosthetic
breasts made of saline or silicone
gel, while reconstruction using the patient's own abdominal tissue, known as autologous transfer, requires additional incisions, harvesting of tissue and transplantation of that to the
breast.
To test if there's any scientific credibility to this, Christopher Pannucci, a plastic surgeon at the University of Utah, and his team analysed bullets shot through saline
breast implants into ballistics
gel — a substance designed to mimic human tissue.
When these blocks were placed underneath large saline
breast implants, the distance the bullets travelled into the
gel was reduced by an average of 8 centimetres, or 20 per cent (Journal of Forensic Sciences, doi.org/b9m2).
