The team also confirmed differences in mating strategies, notably that the pathogenic fungus can mate with itself, which influences
gene transfer between generations and genome repair mechanisms, whereas the Quorn ™ fungus would need to find a mate.
But
gene transfer between kingdoms — from animal to bacteria for example, or vice versa, has been much harder to document.
In a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, UFZ researchers have been able to demonstrate that these so - called fungal hyphae also form a hot spot for
gene transfer between bacteria.
More recently, their research has turned to modeling the process of
gene transfer between bacteria in biofilms.

This concern about artificially
transferring genes between kingdoms and species in a way that has never occurred naturally is now being validated by a large body of science.
«It is an intriguing question as to how this Enterococcus strain acquired a botulinum neurotoxin
gene cluster, what benefit it brings to this bacterium, and further work is required to explore the implications of our important finding with regard to the possibility of its
transfer between bacteria.
Once such a
gene is generated, bacteria can then
transfer the genetic information in a horizontal fashion (
between individuals) by plasmid exchange.
«The big prizes — and there are going to be some very big prizes — are going to come from
transferring genes and knowledge
between species,» says Gale.
By tracking these two major markers, Treangen and Rocha calculated that the prokaryotes they studied acquired
between 88 and 98 percent of new
genes through horizontal
transfer.
«They've done this by altering their genetic make - up;
transferring drug - resistant
genes between one another; and creating biofilms, which are multicellular communities where bacteria can be a thousand-fold more resistant to antibiotics.»
Concerns have been raised about the safety of
gene therapy in the past, not least about links
between the viruses used to
transfer the
genes and disease.
The researchers found that there appeared to be a tipping point, where a patient would go from having lots of individual mutations, but no cancer, to a situation where large pieces of genetic information were being
transferred not just
between genes but
between chromosomes.
Having three versions of the genome to compare helped the researchers distinguish
between contamination and real horizontal
gene transfer, says Max Telford, a phylogeneticist at University College London.
In their research, the UFZ scientists were also able to show that much greater
gene transfer takes place
between bacteria on the fungal highway than in a moist environment without fungal hyphae.
The thread to follow here is that the invention of nuclear
transfer technology — the means to move
genes between cells and also backward in time — started the countdown to human reproductive cloning.
Alternatively, because the vesicles contain DNA, they may facilitate the exchange of genetic material
between individual bacteria, a process known as horizontal
gene transfer.
High on the suspect list are
genes involved in
transferring information
between neurons.
The panel, chaired by Bettie Sue Masters of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, distinguished
between crops that are genetically engineered (GE)-- having a
gene deleted or
transferred between species — and those that are genetically modified by other methods.
The matching sequences likely mean that the
genes were
transferred at some point
between the soil bacteria and the pathogens, the team reports online today in Science.
This finding relativizes the novelty of producing GM insects, since such insects already exist in nature but also highlights that
genes introduced in GM insects can be
transferred between distant species.
The team discovered that the pattern of differences in genome organization
between various individuals of the same species indicates that the bacteria
transfer DNA, including whole
genes, back and forth.
He studies the evolution of genomes and was the first to show a surprising amount of horizontal
gene transfer (transmission of DNA
between different genomes) in fungi, challenging our notion of how complex traits evolve within species.
But to some people, the very idea of
transferring genes between species conjures up mad scientists running amok — and so, two centuries after Mary Shelley wrote «Frankenstein,» they talk about Frankenfood.
«Evolution of the syntrophic interaction

gene transfer.»
Resistance

Transgenes are
genes that have moved or been
transferred between two different organisms, or lines by means other than sexual reproduction.
1) Plant - mediated
gene silencing: Using plant - mediated
gene silencing, scientists induce plants to
transfer pieces of genetic material to other organisms, targeting and interfering with the interactions
between plants and their pests at the genetic level.
