In the current study with a sample of chronically depressed men and women, rates of physical and psychological victimization were similar to rates reported in a number of
general community samples during a similar time period (Jose and O'Leary 2009; Schafer et al. 1998) and to rates reported with a sample of unipolar and bipolar depressed patients (Dienemann et al. 2000).
Research investigating the influence of cross-partner effects of self - rated health on depressive symptoms finds that they are significant in clinical samples (Coyne et al., 1987; Fultz et al., 2005) and in
general community samples (Galbaud du Fort, Kovess, & Bouvin, 1994; McLeod, 1993).
Although illness may result in poorer or more restricted social relationships (social isolation resulting from physical confinement), such that individuals closer to death may have decreased social support compared to healthy individuals, the findings from these studies indicate that
general community samples with strong social relationships are likely to remain alive longer than similar individuals with poor social relations.

Maybery et al. (2009) compared the SDQ scores of 833 children aged 8 - 12 years, of whom 134 were children of parents with a mental illness who attended an intervention program, 101 were children of parents with a mental illness from the
general community, and 598 were a normative
sample.
We used EHCs as recruitment sites because they provide health - related information that can be used for eligibility screening purposes, and their clients are usually willing to participate in health - related studies endorsed by the Department of Health, HKSAR.37 Although EHCs» clients are representative of the

We studied a very young
sample of the
general population, and psychopathology is not very frequent in
community samples; this could have affected the emergence of more associations.
Besides that, the inspection of model's parameters lead us to conclude that in our
community sample, as in similar studies testing bifactor models and involving both clinical and
community participants, all HADS items, except item # 14, loaded more highly on the
general factor than on each specific group factor.
Our study also has key strengths: 1) analyses were based on a
community sample and we were able to estimate the burden of behavioural problems associated with food insecurity among children in the
general population, while most prior studies focused on high - risk families; 2) longitudinal follow - up of children's mental health allowed us to distinguish different types of symptoms and their developmental patterns over up to 7 years of follow - up; 3) statistical adjustment for multiple individual and family factors potentially associated with children's outcomes.
In addition, over a quarter of the
sample had contact with a
community psychiatric nurse and there was extensive use of
general practitioner (in 77 % of the
sample) and voluntary sector (in 20 % of the
sample) services.
