The International Code

of this policy, coauthored in 1981 by UNICEF and the
World Health Organization (WHO).
The devastating effects
of bottlefeeding, aggressive marketing
of breastmilk substitutes by manufacturers, and
general decline in breastfeeding caused great concern and motivated a movement to raise the alarm. In 1981 it led to the
World Health Assembly's adoption
of the International Code
of Marketing
of Breastmilk Substitutes (also known as the Code).

The 27th
World Health Assembly in 1974 noted the
general decline in breastfeeding related to different factors including the production
of manufactured breast - milk substitutes and urged Member countries to review sales promotion activities on baby foods and to introduce appropriate remedial measures, including advertisement codes and legislation where necessary.
The UK has one
of the most entrenched bottle feeding cultures in the
world, and despite overwhelming evidence that breastfeeding saves lives, improves
health and cuts costs, there continues to be a
general belief that formula milk is almost as good as breastmilk.
Dear Director -
General, I would like to commend you for taking steps to implement the International Code
of Marketing
of Breastmilk Substitutes and subsequent, relevant Resolutions
of the
World Health Assembly in South Africa.
