(District of Columbia) Echoing research that dates back almost 50 years, the latest evaluation of the effectiveness of the federal Head Start program found positive effects on
general reading achievement but nothing more.
Of the 26 programs rated, Reading Recovery achieved strong results, with positive ratings or potentially positive ratings across all four areas studied: alphabetics (phonemic awareness and phonics), fluency, comprehension, and
general reading achievement.
The What Works Clearinghouse review of Spelling Mastery for the Students With Learning Disabilities topic area includes student outcomes in nine domains: alphabetics, reading fluency, reading comprehension,
general reading achievement, mathematics, writing, science, social studies, and progress in school.

reading achievement tests are not even very good predictors of later test results relative to other types of skills and more
