In some cases of chronic pain, what begins as an acute, localized injury spreads and becomes
a generalized pain syndrome known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
The team also looked at a phenomenon called post-treatment Lyme disease
syndrome, characterized by a constellation of symptoms, such as fatigue,
generalized musculoskeletal
pain and cognitive slowing, that can occur six months after an initial diagnosis of Lyme.
