generation GL - Class arrived on the market back in 2012, but no major updates have been made to its weight.
The second -
generation GL, launched in the 2013 model year, is a big, blocky vehicle that competes with the Cadillac Escalade rather than tighter, sleeker luxury crossovers like the Audi Q7.
The first -
generation GL, introduced for 2007, was initially designed to replace the G - class (a.k.a. Geländewagen).
But before the next -
generation GLS goes on sale, Mercedes has created a new, more luxurious trim level: the Grand Edition.
What that means is this study doesn't preview the Maybach - badged version of the next -
generation GLS; instead, it tests the waters to see if there could be demand for an uber - luxurious sedan on stilts.
While the smooth - surfaced Vision Ultimate Luxury is unlikely to reach production in its unconventional three - box form with distinctive split - window treatment, various elements of its exterior design, including its bold chromed grille, are expected to be used on a new Mercedes - Maybach production car based on the forthcoming third -
generation GLS.

GL and BMW X5; maybe it secretly hoped a few Porsche Cayenne owners might migrate to the brand too.
This
generation's appearance is more in line with other large luxury SUVs like the Mercedes - Benz
GL - Class, Audi Q7, Lexus LX, Land Rover Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, and Lincoln Navigator.
In future, Mercedes could also launch a more luxurious version of the
GLS under its Maybach sub-brand, although that may not come about before the next
generation is introduced.
There's no mistaking the 2018 Mercedes - Benz
GLS - Class as coming from any other manufacturer; however, its upright lines and squared shoulders definitely give it a last -
generation appearance despite last year's general softening of the lines.
A station wagon version was offered in this
generation as the
GLS.
The Mercedes
GL - Class entered production in 2006 and six years later, is still rolling around in its first
generation.

generation model, now undergoing the first stages of development at the German carmaker's headquarters in Stuttgart, is also planned to be produced alongside the M -, R - and

At the launch of the new
GLS generation, all versions will feature the nine - speed 9G - TRONIC automatic transmission as standard (except the Mercedes - AMG
GLS63), optionally in combination with low - range gearbox and center differential lock.
